In other words, the medication slows and relaxes the heart, which reduces the heart's need for oxygen. It also widens and relaxes blood vessels, improving blood flow. All together, Calan reduces blood pressure, stabilizes rapid or erratic heartbeat, and improves oxygen supply to the heart.

Calan is primarily used to treat cardiovascular issues, though it's not suitable for everyone. It can also be used to treat migraine and cluster headaches; the exact mechanism by which it works for headaches is unclear. Patients most often buy Calan to treat:

The medication comes in tablets, taken two to four times per day, with the most common being three times per day. Tablets can be taken with or without food as desired; those who experience stomach upset may want to try taking them with food.

In all cases dosage typically starts on the lower end, increased every few days as-needed, if needed. Dosage guidelines are as follows:

• For hypertension - most patients find benefit at 80 mg three times a day (240 mg total). This may be lowered to 40 mg three times per day or go up to 120 mg three times per day according to individual response.
• For arrhythmia or rapid heartbeat - 240 mg to 480 mg per day, taken in three or four divided doses.
• For angina - 80 mg to 120 mg per day, taken in three divided doses. Rarely dosage may be higher.

Migraine and cluster headaches are off-label uses for Calan; off-label use is fully legal but is not approved by regulatory agencies, so there's no official dosing information. Patients should consult a doctor for the ideal dosage; it generally ranges from 40 to 120 mg three times per day, but there may be exceptions.

Other medications are often taken along with Calan. Check with a doctor or pharmacist before mixing treatments, especially if they're all designed to treat the same condition.
